The Jenkins’ Kitchen Remodel
The Jenkins’ were not happy with the confined space in their kitchen. This was due in part to a peninsula that separated the kitchen from the rest of the living space. The original design did not take advantage of the wall space that wrapped around the corner from the kitchen to the informal dining area. Mrs. Jenkins wanted display her treasured collectibles, but all she had was a lonely, orphaned corner cabinet. She wanted glass door cabinets with interior lighting to showcase her dishware and crystal. An outdated oak box fluorescent light fixture was their only source of lighting, plus they really wanted an Island in their kitchen.
The first step was to open up the space by removing the wall separating the kitchen from the main living area. This freed up the space needed for the Island. Next the cabinetry was repositioned to take advantage of the new space and allow for great traffic flow around the new central Island. The hardwood floors were extended into the living area and radius edged to mirror the countertop edge on the Island, then sanded and re-finished to better compliment the new wood finishes in the kitchen. Now the kitchen is able to take advantage of all the natural light streaming in and is further enhanced by the 3-lite pendant over the Island, recessed ceiling lights, and the new Xenon under-cabinet lighting. The breakfast room now features lighted glass door cabinetry to display fine crystal, china and other family treasures. Besides the functional new Island, a custom hood feature was brought in to compliment the beautiful tile and inset over the range. The new kitchen was further enhanced with beautiful granite countertops and an under-mount sink with a new faucet in a brushed stainless steel finish.
